Perhaps your favourite seat feels different, the upholstery is looking tired or the sofa no longer suits the way you use the room. Does that mean it’s time for a replacement?

Start by identifying what you would like to improve. Some issues may be addressed with care or a repair; others are a reason to explore a different design.

Here are the questions worth asking before you decide.

Has the comfort changed, or has it never felt quite right?

Think back to when the sofa was new.

If you once found it comfortable but one seat has become noticeably lower or uneven, ask your retailer or an upholstery specialist to assess the change. Check the care instructions too, including whether the cushions need regular plumping, turning or rotating. Only do what is suitable for their design.

If the sofa has always felt too deep, too shallow or too firm for your taste, it may be the fit rather than a fault. Write down exactly what doesn’t work so you can compare alternatives more usefully.

“More comfortable” is a starting point. “A shallower seat with a higher back” gives you something specific to try.

Is the issue appearance, damage or how the sofa works?

A marked cushion, torn seam and faulty reclining mechanism are different problems, so the next step may be different for each.

For cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ask for advice before trying an unfamiliar product. Removable covers are not necessarily washable.

For damage or a change in how the furniture operates, contact your retailer with photographs and a clear description. Ask whether an assessment, repair or replacement part is available for your model.

Check any applicable guarantee or protection-plan documents before paying for work. If a part is loose, sharp or unstable, avoid using the affected seat until it has been assessed.

Does it still suit your household?

A sofa can remain in good condition while your needs change.

You may need more separate seats, prefer to put your feet up or want furniture that fits a different room after a move. Sometimes adding an armchair or changing the arrangement will help; sometimes a different sofa configuration makes more sense.

Request a written quote explaining what the work includes, the expected result and any cover provided for the repair. Ask about the timeframe and whether work takes place at home or elsewhere.

Then compare that with the cost and practicalities of replacement. Include delivery arrangements, any old-sofa removal costs and the time you may be without suitable seating.

A repair makes most sense when it addresses the issue you actually want to solve. Replacing a damaged cushion won’t change a sofa’s overall size or layout.
